One thing that blogging could be useful for in the class room is to have students comments on the work we are doing in class weather it be during Health or PE. This comment could be about how fun or boring class is or idea they may have to make it the way they want it. I could create discussion boards about different topics and the students could log in and talk about their learning experiences. As I have stated I am a P.E./Health teacher so most of my blogging would come in my health class, but i would love students to tell me about PE and there concerns. The only problem is that at our school don’t have the most reliable equipment and some students don’t have the at home to require blogging.
The next idea that i would have is to make the blog were students can post their work and other students would be required to make comments to there peers work. These comments must be only positive. Our district requires that we grade students on personal communication and how they interact. This grading technique or sharing technique could surf ice and help aid with our district assessments.

I think it is great that you would like to use your blog for a place where students share feedback on your class. Often we do not ask students for their opinions or for suggestions. You may get valuable input. However, I find we get the most honest feedback when it is done anonymously. Is there a way you can do that on your blog?
ReplyDeleteWhat type of work for your class would be available for students to post on your blog? Do you have papers for your health class?
Trenton,
ReplyDeleteThe idea of grading students on personal communication is one that I support but foresee a few problems with. How does your district expect you to do this grading? Is it subjective or do you have a rubric? My thought is this, if students are supposed to comment on a blog about another student's work, and they do this well, in their own eyes, when you go to assign them a grade and they don't agree with it, what happens then? Since their comments are now permananetly in writing on this blog, how many siutaions may occur when a parent, student, or administrator reads the blog and disagrees with the grade that you assigned for their persnal communication. As we know, email and written communication is often subjective and taken in various ways based on the reader's perspectives, moods, and overall content of what they wrote. I could be way off base since your district has been doing this for quite some time, but certainly something to think about with the idea of blogging.
I love your thought of using this in health class. Could you even pre-plan and take the class to a computer lab for a lesson one day where you start the health assignment together? This way, you could monitor progress and provide all students in your class, equal user oppurtunities. Be flexible in your blog deadlines and some students may finish work at home, while others could schedule extra time with you or the librarian, or even another tech teacher to get their assignment finished at school. Good luck with it all and I hope this gave you something to think about!
Lynne,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response! I’m not sure if the students can post anonymously I will have to check into that. I think you pose a great idea though, true feedback definitely comes anonymously. I think some of the thing I would have students post on my blog would be there opening paragraphs to papers they are writing. This will help students to get constructive feedback and to see if they are moving in the right direction. They are required to write district assessments on lots of different topics and that’s where this could come into play.
Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a learning situation for each of us. They would be giving ideas and critiques on how they are responding to others. This could also be done in a participations sense until all students understand. I’m really not sure how this all will play out, but I thought it seemed like a good idea. I think reserving the comp lab is a great idea and would help with students who need extra time or don’t have the access. Thanks for you input and ideas they definitely gave me something to think about.
